About

Switch & Change is a character endurance game built around four players in constant rotation. The two front players perform a scene while the two back players watch closely. 'Switch' forces the front pair to instantly embody each other's characters. 'Change' pulls the back pair forward to take over the scene while the front pair retreats. Every player must be ready to step in and continue at any moment - which means the characters must be observed and held in the body at all times.

How to Play

  1. 1

Four players take the stage: two stand in front and begin a scene from the director's suggestion, two stand behind them and watch carefully.

  2. 2

The director calls 'Switch!' - the two front players immediately swap characters with each other, adopting the other's voice, physicality, position and point of view. The scene continues.

  3. 3

The director calls 'Change!' - the two back players step forward and take over the scene, continuing it from exactly the point it was frozen. The two front players move to the back and now become the watchers.

  4. 4

The commands can come rapidly or after long stretches. Players must stay in a state of constant readiness.

  5. 5

The scene ends when the director calls it, ideally at a strong dramatic or comedic moment.

Variations

  • -Rapid fire: the director calls Switch and Change every 10-15 seconds without pause, creating a blur of character transitions. Character accumulation: each new Change introduces a subtle evolution - the back players continue the characters but add one new trait.
