Say What

Two players improvise a scene until someone calls "Say What?" — forcing their partner to rhyme their last line on the spot. Fail, and the next player in line steps in.

About

Two players improvise a scene based on a location from the audience. At any moment, either player can challenge the other with "Say What?" — a demand for the last spoken line to be immediately rhymed. If the challenged player succeeds, the scene continues; if they can't find a rhyme, they head to the back of the waiting line and the next player enters, starting a fresh scene in the same location with whoever remains on stage. The show's host (MC) controls when the location changes, calling for a new audience suggestion to reset the game's premise whenever the energy calls for it. The game rewards quick verbal wit and the ability to keep a scene alive under pressure. "Say What?" can be deployed tactically — called right after a line that's particularly hard to rhyme — or generously, as a crowd-pleasing comic beat. Either way, it keeps both players and audience on their toes.

How to Play

  1. 1

Get a location suggestion from the audience.

  2. 2

Two players start a scene set in that location. The remaining players wait in a line at the side of the stage.

  3. 3

At any moment, either player can call "Say What?" to challenge their partner.

  4. 4

The challenged player must immediately deliver a new line that rhymes with their previous line. The meaning can shift entirely — any genuine rhyme counts.

  5. 5

If the rhyme lands, the scene continues as normal.

  6. 6

If the challenged player cannot produce a rhyme, they go to the back of the waiting line.

  7. 7

The next player in line enters and starts a new scene in the same location alongside the remaining player.

  8. 8

The MC can call for a new location at any time, prompting a fresh audience suggestion and resetting the scene.

Variations

  • -Double Dare: after a successful rhyme, the challenger may immediately call "Say What?" once more, demanding a second rhyme from the same player. Maximum two consecutive challenges.
  • -Rhyme Chain: a successful "Say What?" challenge requires not just one rhyming line but a three-line chain — the challenged player must keep the rhyme going for two more lines before the scene returns to normal.
