Red Ball
Players toss an imaginary red ball around the circle, building a fixed pattern. More objects are gradually added - each with its own name and physical weight - until the whole group is fully present.
About
Red Ball is an essential warm-up for focus, listening and ensemble awareness. What starts as a single imaginary ball becomes an increasingly complex network of objects, each with their own name, weight and trajectory. The game fails beautifully when someone catches a ball no one threw, and succeeds brilliantly when the whole group is fully present.
How to Play
- 1
Player A mimes picking up a red ball, makes clear eye contact with any player across the circle, says 'Red ball, [name]!' and throws it with matching physicality.
- 2
The receiver catches it with matching physicality, says 'Thank you!' and throws to someone else, naming them.
- 3
Establish a fixed pattern - every throw always follows the same path around the circle.
- 4
Once the pattern is solid, introduce a second object on a different fixed path with a different name and mimed weight (e.g. a heavy bowling ball, a tiny marble).
- 5
Gradually add more objects (up to 5-7) until the group is fully engaged managing all of them simultaneously.
Variations
- -Add an object that transforms mid-flight: it leaves as a small ball and arrives as a large boulder - the catcher must respond to what they actually receive.
