About

A contemplative short-form game that transforms the stage into a poets' salon. Before the game, each participant privately receives two audience suggestions — an emotion and a word — which they must weave into an original poem. One by one, in any order they choose, players step forward, introduce their poetic persona, and perform two verses of four lines each. Dimmed lights and softly playing mysterious music (when available) heighten the ritual atmosphere and invite the audience into a moment of stillness unusual in improv. The game rewards vulnerability, wordplay, and the willingness to commit fully to a character's inner life. Poets' Circle works as a closing piece for a show or workshop — its quietude provides a striking contrast to the high-energy games that typically precede it.

How to Play

  1. 1

Collect one emotion and one word from the audience for each player; keep the assignments secret until performance time.

  2. 2

Set the atmosphere: dim the lights and start low-volume mysterious background music if available.

  3. 3

Give each player their emotion and word privately. Allow two to three minutes for silent composition.

  4. 4

When ready, players step forward one at a time in any order they choose.

  5. 5

Each player begins by presenting themselves — introducing their poetic persona with a name, a brief gesture, or a character detail.

  6. 6

They then recite their poem: two verses of four lines each, incorporating their assigned emotion and word.

  7. 7

After each poem, the group holds a brief moment of silence before the next player steps forward.

  8. 8

Continue until all players have performed.

Variations

  • -Responsive Circle: after all poems are read, the audience votes on a single emotion and a single word; each player must incorporate both into an improvised final verse on the spot.
  • -Chain Poem: instead of full individual poems, players alternate lines, building one collective poem that weaves together all their assigned words.
  • -Duel of Verses: two players receive the same emotion but different words and perform back-to-back, letting the contrast speak for itself.
