Hot Spot
One player stands in the centre and sings any song that comes to mind. When another player feels inspired, they tap the centre player out and start a new song triggered by a word or feeling from the last one.
About
Hot Spot is a free-associative musical warm-up that builds spontaneity, courage and group support. The connections between songs need not be logical - a word, an image, a feeling is enough. The game works best when players stop planning their next song and simply react to what is happening in the centre.
How to Play
- 1
One player steps into the centre of the circle and begins singing any song - any genre, any era, even a jingle or a children's song.
- 2
Any other player who feels inspired by a word, image or emotion in the current song can tap the centre player on the shoulder.
- 3
The centre player immediately steps back into the circle. The new player takes over and starts a different song connected in some way to what just happened.
- 4
The group can also call out supportive sounds or clap along - the centre player should never feel alone.
- 5
Keep the transitions fast. The moment inspiration arrives, act on it.
Variations
- -Phrase hot spot: use spoken phrases or lines of poetry instead of songs, for groups who are uncomfortable singing.
