Genre Switch

Two players perform a scene and then replay it in a series of genres called by the audience. The plot stays the same; everything else - tone, physicality, pacing, language - transforms completely.

About

Genre Switch (also known as Film and Theatre Styles) is one of the richest short-form games for scene analysis and character work. Replaying the same events through wildly different genre lenses makes the genre conventions themselves visible and playable. It rewards broad cultural knowledge, physical adaptability and the ability to stay grounded in the original scene's logic.

How to Play

  1. 1

Two players perform a short scene (60-90 seconds) from an audience suggestion.

  2. 2

The audience or facilitator calls a genre: horror, silent film, soap opera, musical, Westerns, documentary, etc.

  3. 3

The players immediately replay the same scene - same characters, same basic plot beats - but entirely through the lens of the new genre.

  4. 4

After 45-60 seconds, a new genre is called. Players switch instantly.

  5. 5

Continue through 4-6 genres before bringing the scene to a close in the final style.

Variations

  • -Mashup: call two genres simultaneously and let the players blend them. Decade switch: replay in different historical eras rather than genre styles.
