Category Relay
Players rapid-fire items from a named category around the circle with no hesitation, repetition or deviation. Trains speed, word association and the instinct to commit to the first thing that comes to mind.
About
Category Relay is a simple but effective warm-up for the cognitive agility required in improv - particularly the ability to produce a response before the analytical mind has time to reject it. The best categories are specific enough to have clear boundaries but open enough to be genuinely surprising. The game rewards first instinct, not the cleverest answer.
How to Play
- 1
One player names a category: 'things you find in a kitchen', 'reasons to be late', 'famous scientists', etc.
- 2
Starting immediately, players go around the circle rapid-firing one item per person.
- 3
No pausing, repeating a previous answer or going outside the category.
- 4
A player who hesitates, repeats or goes blank is gently noted and a new category begins immediately.
- 5
Increase speed each round. Unusual and specific categories consistently produce the best answers.
Variations
- -Two categories simultaneously, alternating around the circle - one player does category A, the next does category B. Competitive format: last player to give a valid answer in each round scores a point.
